Steps to Replace a Switch or Outlet
Turn Off the Power:
- Switch off the circuit breaker for the outlet or switch you’re replacing.
- Use a voltage tester to confirm there is no electricity at the switch or outlet.
Remove the Old Cover Plate:
- Use a screwdriver to remove the screws holding the cover plate.
Disconnect the Old Switch or Outlet:
- Unscrew the device from the electrical box.
- Carefully pull it out to expose the wires.
Label the Wires (if needed):
- Take note of which wires connect to which terminals (or take a photo). This ensures correct wiring for the new switch or outlet.
Disconnect the Wires:
- Use a screwdriver to loosen the terminal screws and release the wires.
- If wires are wrapped tightly, use needle-nose pliers to free them.
Prepare the Wires:
- If necessary, strip about 1/2 inch of insulation from the wire ends with wire strippers.
- Ensure wires are free of damage or corrosion.
Connect the New Switch or Outlet:
- Attach the wires to the correct terminals:
- For an Outlet: Black (hot) wire to brass screw, white (neutral) wire to silver screw, and ground wire to the green screw.
- For a Switch: Black wires to brass screws, and ground wire to the green screw.
- Tighten the screws to secure the wires.
- Attach the wires to the correct terminals:
Tuck the Wires and Secure the Device:
- Carefully tuck the wires back into the electrical box.
- Fasten the new switch or outlet to the box with screws.
Attach the Cover Plate:
- Align the cover plate and secure it with the screws.
Turn the Power Back On:
- Restore power at the circuit breaker.
- Test the new switch or outlet to ensure it works properly.
