Steps to Replace a Light Fixture
Turn Off Power at the Breaker:
- Switch off the circuit breaker for safety.
- Use a voltage tester to ensure no power is flowing to the fixture.
Remove the Old Fixture:
- Unscrew any covers or decorative parts to access the mounting hardware.
- Disconnect the fixture from the electrical box by removing screws or nuts.
Disconnect the Wires:
- Pull down the fixture to access the wiring.
- Remove the wire connectors and disconnect the old wires (black, white, and ground).
Prepare the New Fixture:
- Check the manufacturer’s instructions for installation details.
- Strip about 1/2 inch of insulation from the new fixture’s wires if necessary.
Attach the Mounting Bracket (if required):
- Install the mounting bracket to the electrical box using screws if your new fixture has one.
Connect the Wires:
- Match the fixture wires to the electrical box wires:
- Black (hot) to black wire
- White (neutral) to white wire
- Green or bare copper (ground) to the ground wire or screw
- Match the fixture wires to the electrical box wires:
Secure the Fixture:
- Push the wires back into the electrical box.
- Attach the new fixture to the mounting bracket or directly to the electrical box.
Install Light Bulbs and Cover:
- Insert the bulbs and attach any decorative covers or shades.
Turn Power Back On and Test:
- Restore power at the breaker.
- Test the fixture to ensure it works properly.
Adjust or Secure as Needed:
- Tighten any screws if the fixture wobbles or is uneven.
