Steps to Fix a Garbage Disposal

    • Turn Off the Power:

      • Unplug the unit or switch off the circuit breaker for safety.
    • Check for a Jam:

      • Use a flashlight to inspect the disposal.
      • Remove any visible blockages using tongs or pliers—never use your hands.
    • Manually Rotate the Blades:

      • Insert a hex/Allen wrench into the slot on the bottom of the disposal and turn it back and forth to free jammed blades.
      • Alternatively, use a wooden spoon to move the blades from inside the sink.
    • Press the Reset Button:

      • If the disposal stopped after being overloaded, press the reset button located on the bottom of the unit to restart it.
    • Check for Power Issues:

      • Ensure the outlet works by testing another device.
      • Reset the GFCI outlet or circuit breaker if needed.
    • Test the Disposal:

      • Restore power and run cold water through the disposal while switching it on to confirm it’s working.
    • Clear Drainpipe Clogs:

      • If water isn’t draining, disconnect the drain pipe and check for blockages. Use a plumber’s snake to clear any obstructions.
    • Inspect for Leaks:

      • Tighten loose screws and connections at the mounting ring, drainpipe, or sink flange.
      • Replace worn gaskets or reapply plumber’s putty if necessary.
